CHAPTER 23 - TAI

“THE BEETROOT SALAD’S good,” Russell said. “I had it last night.”

Yes, I’d decided to meet with him. Ren was wrong. He had to be wrong. Or maybe I just didn’t want to believe I was such a lousy judge of character.

Anyhow, I’d taken a calculated risk. I’d weighed up the strong likelihood of losing a friend against the slim chance Ren might be right about Russell’s involvement in the robbery and taken a cab to the Winter Palace. Surely nobody would start a war on the terrace of a five-star hotel?

Even so, I couldn’t help looking around at the other diners who were talking softly in the candlelight. A young couple who appeared to be very much in love. A quartet of grey-haired tourists comparing Luxor to the city of Aswan further up the Nile. A bespectacled Middle Eastern businessman obsessed with checking his phone. A family with a toddler laughing as he covered his face in ketchup. None of them gave off “we’re here to kill you” vibes.

“Okay, I’ll try the salad.” I still wasn’t hungry. Secretly, I’d also hoped that dinner with Russell might take my mind off the terrible events at al-Nahas, but it hadn’t helped at all. “Any suggestions for the main course? Something light.”

“How about fish? The grilled snapper’s a small portion. I could eat two and still have room left for dessert.”

“Sounds good. How was work this morning?”

Russell waved the waiter over and ordered for both of us before answering. Steak and scalloped potatoes for him with a side order of seasoned carrots, which was another point against his possible involvement in the massacre at al-Nahas—he certainly hadn’t lost his appetite.

“Work was painful. One of our newer team members made a mistake, and having to fix it remotely then apologise to the client by Skype was a hundred times more difficult than it would’ve been in person.”

“Does that mean you’ll be leaving soon?”

“Now you sound like my brother.” Russell paused to swallow half a glass of wine, which was odd for a man who usually sipped. “He turned up unexpectedly and found me with my laptop, and from his reaction, you’d think he’d caught the love of his life cheating.”

“He was upset?”

“That’s an understatement. He accused me of being ungrateful for everything he’d organised and said that if I planned to spend the whole day with my computer, I might as well do that in England and save the hotel bill. I think he was serious. He even offered to help me pack.”

“And will you go?”

“This place is growing on me. Did you know it was below freezing in London today?” Russell reached across the table and squeezed my hand, smiling. “The company’s better in Luxor too.”

Oh, hell. Did that little touch mean what I thought it meant?

It was all happening today, wasn’t it? First the massacre, followed by Ren admitting he liked my ass, and then the first indication that Russell might see me as slightly more than a prop.
